Damp Proofing in the Summer

The summer season is the best time to carry out damp proofing works on your property, especially if your property has suffered from damp issues during the cold and damper months. Problems such as rising damp and penetrating damp can cause structural issues as well as health issues to the property occupiers, it therefore better to solve the damp issue earlier rather than later.

Damp and mould growth

Rising damp is a common problem that usually occurs when the ground is wet and the moisture from the ground is absorbed up through the walls. This moisture is then absorbed by the masonry via capillary action, being carried up through the walls that are in contact with the wet ground, causing damp issues within the property. Ordinarily rising damp can rise up to about one metre high, leaving a tide line across the affected wall however in severe conditions it can rise up to 2 metres high.

Tide line from rising damp

This issue can usually be resolved by installing a damp proof course, which prevents the moisture rising up the walls. However once the damp walls have dried out, it is possible the wall can be contaminated with ground salts on the surface. This can cause further damp issues even after the damp proof course is installed, as it is moisture retaining. As a result any moisture within the property is absorbed and retained to the effected walls causing further damp problems.

Blown plaster from damp issues

In order to prevent this from occurring the plaster is to be removed and re-plastered with an added salt retardant to prevent any further salts migrating up the wall. With the warm weather drying out the ground water, it is an ideal condition for treatments to be carried out, as it speeds up the drying out process for the wall and plastering enabling the affected areas to be habitable much quicker.
