Basement Waterproofing for a Flooded Basement

With the recent weather taking a turn for the worst our Damp Specialists have been helping homeowners across the UK with a variety of damp related problems. With the recent flooding causing much distress to many home-owners it is reassuring to know that our Damp Proofing Specialists are here to lend a helping hand.

One of the most common problems we have been helping people with as a result of the recent weather conditions are flooded basements. Flooded basements can potentially cause damage to interior decoration and furniture and thats before you even start to look at the repair costs! Usually basement flooding is caused by a failed waterproofing system or that the basement was not waterproofed in the first place.

As our Damp Specialists deal with these encounters on a daily basis, they are experts in their field of work and can recommend the best waterproofing system, specifically designed for your property.

Waterproofing your basement

As basements are below ground floor level they lie beneath the water table. There is usually a protective coating on the exterior wall below ground however, over time this coating may deteriorate allowing water to penetrate through the walls and floors and into the basement. In severe cases, such as the recent flooding, this is also likely to happen to existing waterproofing systems if they have not been installed correctly.

One way that our Damp Specialists use to solve this issue is through the installation of a waterproof membrane to the interior walls.

Basement Waterproofing System

The cavity drain membrane diverts the water  by letting it run down the back of the membrane and then collecting it in a channel, fitted at ground level, around the perimeter of the basement. This water is then collected in a sump and pump unit which is fitted below floor level (see above) and is finally pumped away from the building to a convenient drain off point. As a result, this helps lowers the level of the water table, easing the pressure on the basement walls.

Once the waterproofing system is installed the walls can ready for plastering and decorating, turning your basement into a suitable storage area or extra living space.
